Message from the Chairman Due to some conflicts, we have moved our October 27 General Meeting to the Early Head Start facility at 909 NE 52nd Avenue (the old Normandale School). We held a meeting there a couple of years back and hope that neighbors close to this venue in particular will attend.

Hard to believe that summer is over. Fall brings us changing leaves, a nip in the air, and peals of school bells as Rose City Park students return to their classes. In this issue of the newsletter we will hear about what is new at Roseway Heights School and Archbishop Howard School (see page 4). Our General Meeting agenda also focuses on neighborhood school issues as representatives from Portland Public Schools (PPS) update us on the status of the shuttered Rose City Park School. As you may have noticed, there is a preponderance of young children in our neighborhood who will start school in the next few years. We hope that PPS is preserving the option to reopen the school, and appreciate that the district’s Marlys Mock and Stefee Knudsen have agreed to attend our meeting. We have also invited our School Board Member, Pam Knowles, to attend, and hope that she can provide an update from the perspective of the Board.

Construction to improve the intersection of NE 57th Avenue, NE Alameda Street, and NE Sandy Boulevard is about to begin. Representatives from the City of Portland’s Bureau of Transportation presented the design at a General Meeting a few months ago, and we will now have an opportunity to hear about what has changed as well as how traffic will be impacted during the construction. We look forward to hearing from Norberto Adre, the Bureau’s Project Manager for the upgrade work, on how things are going so far.

We also hope that our Neighborhood Police Officer will be able to join us and give an update on neighborhood crime issues.

Finally, our agenda includes a short presentation of the 2009 George and Esther Walker Community Service Awards and an update on the development of our first neighborhood community garden (which would be sited in Frazer Park next to our meeting location). Many volunteers have spent untold hours working to make our vision for this garden a reality.

We wish the students and teachers at all of our neighborhood’s schools the best of luck this year, and hope that many of you can join us at our October 27 General Meeting at Normandale Early Head Start.
