Stretches of sweltering sunshine aside, spring and summer were pleasant and productive seasons for RCPNA.

We welcomed new arrivals to Rose City Park at our Welcome New Neighbor Night/General Meeting on May 26 (a big thank you to Portland Nursery for donating the door prizes). Two presenters with Airport Futures – Scott King of the Port of Portland and Jay Sugnet of the City of Portland – provided an overview of long-range planning for the Portland International Airport through 2035. They were followed by Karen Carpenter of Resolutions Northwest, who described the free neighbor-to-neighbor mediation services the City of Portland funds her group to provide. We heard updates on several ongoing projects, including the Community Garden Project (see “Community Garden Project Update,” page 5), the Summer Concerts, and the Neighborhood Clean-Up. We then reviewed and voted to approve our slate of RCPNA Board Members and Officers, and heard updates from the Land Use/Transportation Committee (see “Land Use/Transportation Update,” page 7).

We raised some money and helped our neighbors spruce up their yards and homes with our Neighborhood Clean-Up on May 30. Twenty-seven adult volunteers and 15 youth volunteers (most of them Central Catholic High School students) helped neighbors unload trash and reusable and recyclable materials that filled up 11 Dumpsters. We collected $3,625 in donations, which was down a third from what we earned last year ($5,300), but this proved to be the case at other neighborhood clean-ups across the city. Congratulations and a big thank you to RCPNA Board Member/Clean-Up Chair Dale Bailey and all who helped out.

At its June 2 meeting, the RCPNA Board voted to reduce the number of General Meetings held each year from five to four. This will also reduce the number of newsletters RCPNA will publish each year from five to four. See the front page of this newsletter for the updated schedule of General Meetings for the fall of 2009 and spring of 2010.

Finally, thanks to the hard work of RCPNA Board Member Dave Carter and the generosity of local sponsors, we were able to offer another series of Summer Concerts at Rose City Park. Local groups Quartette Barbette and Michael Manning and the Carolina Pump Station played on (respectively) July 18 and July 25.
