Seafood Market and Restaurant to Open in RCP
Seafood lovers in Rose City Park and beyond are in for a treat this fall as Cabezon Restaurant and Seafood Market opens in the storefront at 5204 NE Sacramento Street formerly occupied by Violet’s Café and the short-lived Whale’s Tale Restaurant.
Taking its name from the Spanish word for a type of spiny game fish, during the day Cabezon will offer for sale fresh fish and shellfish with a particular emphasis on catches harvested by local fishermen. In the evenings, a bar and grill will open to serve Mediterranean-inspired tapas and bistro-sized entrees of seafood and meats.
Co-owners David Farrell and Jackie Speck bring a wealth of culinary and restaurant-management expertise to their project. Virginia-born Farrell cooked for establishments in Avignon in southern France, San Francisco, and Santa Fe, New Mexico before moving to Portland and completing a tour of duty at the fish counter of noted eatery Clarklewis. Speck brings over 14 years of experience working the service side of the business as a waitress, hostess, and manager.
Inspired by Portland’s vibrant food scene to open their own place, Farrell and Speck saw a need in Northeast Portland for a retailer and restaurant offering high-quality seafood at approachable prices. They selected Rose City Park for its attractive mix of households and incomes and the opportunity to add a “casual-but-fine dining” option to the neighborhood’s dining choices.
Farrell and Speck hope to have Cabezon open by November 1. The market will be open from noon to 6:30 pm Monday through Saturday, with the restaurant open for dinner on the same days between 5:30 and 9:30 pm (later on Fridays and Saturdays).
Best wishes to Farrell and Speck!
